Whilst specialising in tents and bivis for hill and mountain use, we stock a wide range from well-established brands like Vango, Mountain Equipment, Rab, Terra Nova, Wild Country, The North Face, Macpac, Marmot, MSR. We are equally happy to advise on individual, family or group purchases, having equipped many different expeditions over the years. We want to make sure you select the right tent and aim to provide as much information as possible - but please don't hesitate to contact us for further guidance.
A few questions you should ask yourself:
- How important is weight? Will I be carrying the tent, and if so, for only short or longer distances? Or will it be coming straight out of the car boot?
- What sacrifices am I prepared to make in terms of space and comfort in order to achieve a reasonable packsize / carrying weight?
- Where, and in what conditions, do I expect to use my tent? In what season(s), at what altitude(s), with what degree of exposure to severe wind, rain or snow? Just how strong and stable does it need to be? And if you expect to experience high humidity coupled with low temperature, avoid choosing a single-skin tent which will produce potentially unacceptable levels of condensation. Perfect for a fast and light alpine route, but far from ideal on a wet Scottish night.
You don't necessarily need to pay the earth, but you can expect to get what you pay for here. To emerge from your tent at 6000m on the windswept Garganta Col, only to survey the flattened wreckage around you, will always be a humbling experience, but if your tent is one of those still standing you will certainly not regret the outlay. The right tent can often mean the difference between success and failure.
For those occasions when you won't be carrying a tent, we offer a good range of Bivi Bags, providing all the benefits of modern design: lightweight, packable and breathable.
Group Shelters, available in a variety of sizes from Terra Nova, Outdoor Designs, Lifesystems and Vango, keep you out of the wind and rain and ensure that group morale remains high.
Footprints can be purchased where appropriate - a worthwhile additional investment to protect your groundsheet on those inevitable occasions when you know you'll be pitched on stony ground and when the extra few grams aren't the end of the world.
