Clothing needs to be versatile, layered for flexibility. Skinning up or skiing down, at different times during the season, your needs will vary considerably.
Starting with a light, fast-drying baselayer, building up with powerstretch midlayer to a breathable, weatherproof outer layer, whether soft or hard-shell, you need a system which keeps you warm, dry and comfortable yet unencumbered. Hardshell will be necessary only in the most adverse conditions; a Mountain Equipment G2 Mountain Pant topped with a Marmot Pro Tour Jacket, or similar, will normally fit the bill. Where something totally waterproof is required, the best options will include the Berghaus Velum Pant, plus a jacket as breathable, light and packable as possible: choose from a variety of Active or ProShell offerings. For extra warmth add a lightweight and low-profile synthetic gilet such as Rab's Generator Vest. For chilly starts or more exposed situations, take a lightweight Buff to keep your neck free of drafts; it will also double as protection for your head as the sun's rays strengthen. Windstopper gloves may be adequate whilst skinning up, but choose from the range of more substantial insulated gloves, such as those offered by Black Diamond or Marmot, for the descent.
Ski-Specific Rucksacks by market leaders Ortovox and Black Diamond are ranged in sizes suitable for single or multi-day tours.
Safety Equipment will be found here too. We offer a carefully chosen range of shovels and probes as well as crevasse rescue equipment such as the Petzl Micro Traction pulley. If you're doing the Haute Route, or any multi-day trip of this type, make sure you're not weighing yourself down: choose a light - but not too light! - ice-axe such as those offered by DMM or Grivel, and carry a judicious selection of Ice Screws. Make sure, too that you're equipped with Ortovox transceivers as well as the knowledge of how to use them. Technological advances offer improvements in GPS systems, which, combined with a Suunto altimeter watch, will help you to stay on track.
And finally, we defy you not to be tempted by the GoPro camera range: 'The world's most versatile camera' exceeds expectations, going where you go, doing what you do and living to tell the tale.
